Compound Learning is a blog to help me learn more about the way the world works. It’s a blog rather than just a notebook somewhere in my house because you might be interested too.
Compound Learning is based on a few simple ideas:
(1) First and foremost – that learning new things is both fun and meaningful. Understanding the world better is both enjoyable and something we have a responsibility to attempt, so that we can be better people.
(2) That effort in learning compounds over time (hence the name of the blog!). Small steps, building foundations and then deeper knowledge mean that over time there is nothing we can’t teach ourselves.
(3) That we often fool ourselves about how much we know, by mistaking superficial awareness or recognition for understanding. Real learning is humble, and tries honestly to avoid confirmation bias and surface level judgements.
(4) That learning is both easier and harder than we think. Harder because we sometimes think we can just ‘absorb’ ideas through reading / watching / being there. Easier because proper learning uses some fairly simple tactics (a sense of purpose, note-taking, repetition, etc.) that we often forget.
